Residents and businesses across Gauteng and parts of neighbouring provinces are being urged to prepare for possible water supply interruptions as Eskom and Rand Water undertake major planned maintenance work between May and July 2026.
In a joint maintenance programme announced on 15 May, Eskom confirmed that it will carry out critical electrical infrastructure maintenance at the Palmiet and Zuikerbosch systems. The work is aimed at improving pump availability, increasing standby capacity and reducing the risk of equipment failures across Rand Water’s network.
According to the statement, the maintenance is scheduled from 29 May to 17 July 2026 and will require Rand Water to temporarily switch off some pumps, leading to interruptions in water supply.
The planned work includes:
- Eskom-related electrical maintenance at the Zuikerbosch and Palmiet systems;
- Installation and upgrading of motors at Zuikerbosch Raw Water Engine Room 4;
- Replacement of critical valves and thrust bearings at Palmiet, Vereeniging and Foresthill systems; and
- M11 Pipeline cross-connections within the Mapleton system.
Areas expected to be affected include the metros of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, as well as municipalities such as Mogale City, Rand West, Merafong, Midvaal, Emfuleni, Lesedi, Victor Khanye and others.
Various industries, mines and direct customers, including the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), may also experience disruptions during the maintenance period.
Rand Water said the maintenance has been strategically scheduled during winter, when water demand is generally lower, to minimise the impact on consumers. The utility has also issued a 21-day notice to municipalities and customers to allow them time to implement contingency measures.
Residents are encouraged to use water sparingly during the maintenance period and to stay updated through Rand Water’s official communication channels and social media platforms for the latest information on affected areas and supply restoration timelines.
